Pottery, Parasols and Pyramids

Frequent volunteer and “pot lover” Kristina Neumann is joining Archer Martin’s pottery team at Schedia, a site at the juncture between the Canopic Nile and a canal leading to Alexandria. Follow her adventure here.

Can it get any more exciting?

Ceramic Catalog

As part of the work of preparing an interim report on the Northeast Insula Project, I am putting more of the data into an online format. The ceramic catalog is now up. It is organized by year and photos are labeled by basket number. We hope at some point to link analysis to photos. See the catalog at http://hippos.archaeology.csp.edu/albums/ceramics/.

Crossbow Fibula

One of the more interesting small finds from 2010 is a crossbow fibula-a pin used to hold together the corner of a garment at the shoulder. Such pins were worn first by soldiers and later by church officials.

Our fibula has been cleaned:

Some of the detail is quite exquisite:

Our friends at Haifa have just sent new photos of the Hippos Excavation taken from the air using a helicopter.
